Make peace at KCC

Thought the peace movement was over after the 1960s? Well, wear your love beads on the Fourth of July and check out the opening ceremony for Kapiolani Community College's "Portable Art -- Portable Peace, Instrument of Mass Construction" art exhibition.

The free event, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Koa Gallery courtyard, also marks the start of KCC's "2005 Center Your Creativity" summer workshops.

Festivities "pay homage to creativity, peace and the fulfillment of human potential" and include performances by Melinda Carroll, Tokiko Hiyama DeSola, Gerardo Maza, the African drumming group Mambazi-Marimba and Korean drummers.

Performers will lead visitors in a blessing dance. There will also be art and drumming demonstrations, and food. Participants are encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share.

"Portable Art -- Portable Peace" is a traveling exhibit that focuses on world peace. The show was started by Kapiolani's Koa Gallery and will travel around the world. Each country on the tour circuit will contribute artwork so the exhibit will grow as it travels. The show runs through Sept. 30 at the college.

"Center Your Creativity" workshops comprise 17 noncredit courses, starting July 5. Call 734-9374.
