BIG ISLAND
Turtles head to sea

The 4th of July is also "Turtle Independence Day" at Mauna Lani Resort, where honu fans will bid aloha oe to juvenile Hawaiian green turtles from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

In addition to the typical fanfare of parades, flags and consumption of hot dogs, the turtles raised in the resort's saltwater ponds will be gathered and paraded down to the ocean, where a chant and honu hula will precede their release.

Experts will be present to raise awareness and help educate the public regarding the endangered Hawaiian green sea turtle population. Hatchlings born in the wild are subject to predation by birds and larger ocean creatures, so the resort cares for them until they are of a size and weight that increases their survival odds.
