Padovani's Restaurant & Wine Bar offers these wine tastings on Fridays in July. Tastings are held at 6 p.m. Cost is $20 for three half-glasses; $34 for full glasses. Call 946-3456.

All American Reds: Celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with reds from the West Coast on Friday. To be sampled: cabernet from Chateau St. Michelle in Washington and Napa Cellars, pinot noir from Silvan Ridge in Oregon, Santa Barbara Winery and Charles Mitchell Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills.

Thunder from Down Under: Red wines of Australia, July 8. Features shiraz, cabernet and blends from Katherine Hills in Victoria, Grant Burge in Barossa Valley, Majella in Coonawarra, and Yangarra Park and Wirra Wirra, both in McLaren Vale.

Anything but Chardonnay: An exploration of other whites, July 15. Includes sauvignon blanc from New Zealand, vigonier from California and pinot gris from Oregon.

Red Burgundy: Wines from Bouchard, Vincent Girardin and Joseph Drouhin wineries, July 22.

Zinfandel: Wines from Charles Krug, Tres Sabores, Elyse and Tedeschi wineries, July 29.

Old and new

Master Sommelier Roberto Viernes leads a wine-tasting class, 5 p.m. Wednesday at Formaggio in Market City Shopping Center.

"Old World & New World: Are They Really Worlds Apart?" will explore the differences between the same grapes grown in different parts of the world.

Cost is $44, including eight wines and cheeses sampling. Call 739-7719 after 5 p.m.

First Friday affair

Tea at 1024 joins the First Friday celebration this week, hosting "Desserts After Dark."

Stop by to see owner Michelle Henry's revolving art exhibit. A selection of desserts will be available for $3.95 to $6.95 during Gallery Walk hours, from 5 to 9 p.m. Tea sandwiches, scones and tea will also be available. Guests may BYOB.

A view of sake

July's "Wine View" tastings at the Hanohano Room in the Sheraton Waikiki focus on rice wine, or sake.

General manager Keith Mallini will lead a discussion about sake, including a tasting of six styles paired with pupus, at 6:30 p.m. July 7. Cost is $35.

The event will be followed July 21 with a five-course sake-pairing dinner. Cost is $80. Call 921-4600.
