Pipeline seeks
wider audience

Most people I talk to don't believe me, but Pipeline Cafe really is trying to increase its appeal to fans of other music besides mainstream radio hits.

Vice-president and general manager Jed Roa is the person responsible for the variety of events, which have included comedy showcases and rock concerts over the past few months. It's a good opportunity for those who haven't been there for a while to see what kind of changes have been made to the club. These days, Pipeline reminds me more of the Ocean Club than the old World Cafe.

Tomorrow night, the spotlight will shine on house music when "DJ Paul Brandon's House of Wax" gets under way around 10 p.m. Hosted by veteran house DJ Paul Brandon, this 18-and-over party features some of Honolulu's top talent from that scene.

Joining him on the decks are DJs Chinaman, Dawn, Edit, EP, Euphorik, G-Spot, KSM, PSI, and RacerX. If you don't recognize these guys (and girl), you better ask somebody. Cover is $10 for this one; call 296-1027 for more info ...

ANOTHER misconception I've noticed recently is that people think vinyl is dead and gone here on Oahu. If that's the case, why is there a new record shop in Waikiki catering to the needs of crate-diggers from Hawaii and around the world?

Detroit Soul Connection opened last week on the second floor at 159 Kaiulani Ave., near the corner of Kaiulani and Kuhio avenues. Open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, the shop specializes in underground hip-hop, reggae, funk, breaks, soul and jazz. I'm also told there's an impressive collection of 45s here, as well as hard-to-find CDs.

Unfortunately, it looks like your best bet for parking is at the zoo, which means hauling whatever treasure you find a couple of blocks once you're done shopping. But that's a small price to pay for a crack at some rare grooves -- call 924-3345 to see if they've got what you're looking for in stock ...

ALSO WORTH checking out is the new hookah service at Anna Bannana's. Take a trip to the Middle East every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the bar, as the hoses are connected and bowls filled with a variety of flavored tobaccos from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. The best part? There's no cover charge! Call 224-8813 ...
