Jet Ski found, rider
missing off Maui
LAHAINA » The Coast Guard and Maui fire helicopter and vessels were looking last night for a 20-year-old visitor who was on a Jet Ski outing in waters off the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali.
Patrick Hannon of Cambridge, Mass., was last seen by his relatives as he rode a Jet Ski from a barge staging area a few hundred yards off the Hyatt at 4:15 p.m. yesterday, said his cousin Ian Carroll.
Carroll, a Northern California resident, said he and his brother had decided to take Patrick and his brother on a trip to Maui during the summer and yesterday was their first day on the beach.
Carroll said the four of them each drove separate Jet Skis but kept fairly far apart from each other for safety reasons.
Carroll said when the three of them returned to the barge close to 5 p.m., they realized that Hannon was missing and called authorities.
A Jet Ski operator assisting in the search said he found Hannon's Jet Ski about 5 miles off Wahikuli beach park and 3 miles off Lanai.
Carroll said Hannon was wearing blue swim trunks, a white shirt and a red life vest.
"He knows how to swim well," Carroll said.
Carroll said the ocean swells were several feet high but not breaking in the channel between the islands.
