Designated drivers will get free soft drinks at more than 50 Hawaii night clubs, bars and restaurants participating in a state Transportation Department campaign, which runs through Labor Day.
The program started earlier this month and is aimed at establishments frequented by young people. Radio stations are also participating, in hopes of getting the word out.
Last year, there were 142 traffic fatalities in the islands, nearly half of which were alcohol-related.
"The ultimate player in all of this is the one behind the wheel, but hopefully, this program will provide options to our drivers, particularly the younger ones," said state Transportation Department Director Rod Haraga.
A similar designated-driver campaign was held last year and included over 30 clubs and eateries on Oahu.
This year, the state expanded the program to the neighbor islands, including places popular with young people on Maui, the Big Island and Kauai.
