Blaze in Ewa Beach burns 5 acres of brush

About 30 firefighters took less than two hours yesterday to knock out a suspicious brush fire that burned five acres in Ewa Beach, a fire official said.

The fire began sometime before 10:42 a.m. near the Ocean Point subdivision in an open, undeveloped area.

By 12:30 p.m., firefighters from five companies and the Fire Department helicopter had the blaze under control.

Fire Capt. Emmit Kane said the fire was in an isolated area, making it highly unlikely it was accidental. The fire's origin remains undetermined and is being investigated.

Ex-boyfriend threatens woman, damages car

A 36-year-old man with no local address was charged yesterday with criminal property damage after he allegedly smashed the windshield and jumped on a car his ex-girlfriend was in.

Police said Samuel Antolin allegedly violated a protective order and confronted his 37-year-old ex-girlfriend at her Ewa Beach home as she was getting into her boyfriend's car.

The suspect stopped next to the car and allegedly began verbally threatening the woman, police said.

The man allegedly shattered the front windshield of the car with a Heineken beer bottle and his bare fists. Shattered glass flew onto the woman, who was in the driver's seat, causing minor cuts to her forearm and legs.

The suspect then allegedly jumped on the hood and roof of the vehicle several times, police said.

A next-door neighbor held the suspect until police arrived.

Police arrested the suspect, and he was charged yesterday with first-degree criminal property damage.

Suspect is arrested in theft of pocket bike

A 29-year-old Kapolei resident tackled a 32-year-old man who allegedly stole his son's miniature motorcycle yesterday.

Police said the resident saw the suspect driving a car in front of his house. After his barking dog alerted him, the resident found the man about 11:15 a.m. in his garage allegedly walking away with a "pocket bike."

The resident tackled the suspect when he tried to flee and held him until police arrived.

The man also pointed out the car the suspect was driving, which police later learned was stolen from a Waianae home earlier in the morning.
