Young isle musicians to
play Denny’s music
at jazz fest
The
Martin Denny Tribute at this year's Hawaii International Jazz Festival July 30 at the Hawaii Theatre will be performed by
Waitiki, a group of young local musicians who are keeping Martin's "Exotica" music alive. The band is led by
Abe Lagrimas Jr., a Waipahu High graduate, and
Randy Wong, an Iolani grad.
Gabe Baltazar and
Lopaka Colon will join the group. On July 29, opening night of the festival, the Hawaiian Strings segment will feature singer-musician
Owana Salazar on steel guitar, guitarist
Jeff Peterson and
Lagrimas Jr., who will
play jazz ukulele. Some of the music from Owana's Hoku Award-winning "Hula Jazz" album will be presented ...

Isle troops in Iraq winners of Mid-Pac tourney
Mid-Pacific Country Club's Operation Phone Home Golf Tourney raised $30,000 to buy 3,000 phone cards for Hawaii's National Guard and Reserve troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The club also donated 40 cases of local goodies for the isle troops. Right on! ...
Eleanor Bilsborrow, former chair of the UH Speech Dept., was taken to On On Chop Suey for a 90th birthday dinner Thursday by her One Kalakaua girlfriends -- Alice Clay, Lila Chrystal and Pat O'Brien, 93. Eleanor was my freshman UH English teacher in 1950 and steered me to journalism. Pat was also a UH professor at that time. Those gals are tough ...
