The third and final suspect wanted in a brazen Kailua credit union robbery in 2001 was caught in Las Vegas earlier this week.
Wayne Kalai Miller, 21, was arrested on a federal warrant while checking into a Las Vegas hotel and casino on the strip Monday night. Police said Miller was one of three men who robbed the Windward Community Federal Credit Union on Dec. 21, 2001.
According to an affidavit by Honolulu Detective Herbert Soria, Miller was the only one who was armed. He broke the glass entrance doors and posted himself as lookout while the other two jumped over the counter, yelled demands and grabbed money, the affidavit said.
The alleged robbers fled in a stolen white van, then switched to an older-model dark blue pickup truck in an adjacent parking lot fronting Longs Drugs in Kailua, the affidavit said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, investigators recovered a $20 bill and an unfired shotgun shell in the van. The van's interior and exterior had been sprayed with an oily substance, identified as WD-40 by one of the suspects, to prevent the recovery of fingerprints.
Investigators later connected Miller to the pickup truck, which is registered to a relative.
The two other suspects, Taylor Ikaika Garcia and Gavin Koa, are cooperating with federal law enforcement officials. They identified Miller as the armed robber who stood lookout, according to the complaint.
