UH sailors advance at nationals

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team advanced into the winner's bracket of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Racing Championship yesterday at Lake Travis in Austin, Texas.

In the morning's qualification round-robin, UH finished with a 4-2 record to advance with seven other teams.

Conditions were good enough for the winner's bracket to start late in the afternoon, and the Rainbows went 1-2 in the double round-robin to finish the day with a 5-4 mark.

The winner's bracket continues today with the top four teams advancing to another round-robin to determine the overall winner tomorrow.

Tribbler earns wild card into Futures

Jan Tribbler received a wild card into the main draw of the Honolulu Futures and Hilton Waikoloa Futures by winning the men's singles and doubles titles at the USTA Hawaii Open Sectionals at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex yesterday.

Tribbler defeated Dave Andrews 6-1, 6-0 to win the singles match and teamed with Stefan Pampulov to beat Jay Grollman and Michael Bruggemann 6-3, 6-4.

Kalei Gora, who just finished her junior year at Saint Francis, swept the women's titles by defeating Kana Aikawa 6-4, 6-2 in singles. Gora, who won her second straight state high school tennis title last month, teamed with Rie Yukihiro to win the doubles event over Yu-Hsein Kennell and Loni Matsunaga 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
