The American Lung Association of Hawaii is accepting applications for participants and volunteers for its three-day Asthma Sports Day Camps this summer.
The organization is looking for 250 volunteers to assist with the four statewide camps and a total of 135 children ages 5 to 12.
The children learn how to manage asthma at the camps while participating in team sports and other recreational activities.
Brenda Mahuka, program associate-asthma, said medical specialists are needed, as well as people to oversee sporting events, act as counselors and educators and help with other jobs.
"There's plenty to do but it's worth the effort," she said. "It's very enjoyable working with the young people and helping them gain confidence in their own ability to live with asthma."
The camps will be held as follows: Oahu, July 8-10 at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park; Maui, June 17-19, Kamehameha Schools-Maui Campus; Kauai, July 15-17 at Kauai Community College; Big Island, July 22-24, Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii Campus.
Children with mild to severe asthma are encouraged to register for the camps at the Lung Association office on their island.
A registration fee of $25 per child covers all activities, lunches, refreshments and gifts. Financial assistance is available.
