Road work to close
many traffic lanes

There will be temporary lane closures on dozens of Oahu roadways this week as the state Department of Transportation does curb and ramp work to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The work is part of 12 statewide DOT projects, totaling $30.9 million, to make highway facilities comply with the ADA, said DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa.

They include building or replacing sidewalk ramps, replacing curbs, and doing paving, striping and traffic signal work. New, larger buttons to activate pedestrian crossing signals also will be installed.

Lane closures can be expected between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. tomorrow through Thursday. There will be no work Friday in observance of Kamehameha Day.

Work will continue at these and other sites through the end of the month, Ishikawa said, to come into compliance with a federal court-ordered consent decree. Another ADA project, to replace call boxes on state highways, has been extended to the end of the summer, he said.
