Manoa Cup opens Monday

Mari Chun will attempt to become the second female to qualify for the state's amateur match-play championship when the 96th Manoa Cup tees off Monday.

Chun will be among 98 golfers attempting to earn a spot in the match-play field in the qualifying round. The top 63 scorers advance to Tuesday's first round of match-play competition. Defending champion Ryan Perez automatically receives the top seed.

Michelle Wie was the first female to qualify for the field, making it in 2001 at age 11.

The first and second rounds will be held Tuesday. The tournament continues with the third round on Wednesday and the quarterfinals on Thursday. The 36-hole semifinal and final rounds are Friday and Saturday. Play starts at 7 a.m. each day.

UH water polo team finishes fourth

The University of Hawaii water polo team placed fourth in the final National Collegiate Women's Top 20 Poll.

The Rainbow Wahine went 21-11 overall and 9-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation under third-year coach Michel Roy. UH qualified for the NCAA championship for the first time in the program's history and advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual national champion UCLA and finishing fourth in the tournament held in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The ranking is UH's highest since the program's inaugural season in 1998.

USTA hosts Hawaii Open sectionals

The Fairfield Resorts Hawaii Open Sectionals continue this weekend at the University of Hawaii tennis complex with players competing for spots in two professional tournaments in November.

The men's singles winner receives a wild card into the main draw of this year's Honolulu Futures and a qualifying draw berth in the Waikoloa Futures.

The tournament also features men's doubles and women's singles and doubles. It concludes tomorrow and will include a free clinic starting at 10:30 a.m.
