Slater captures Globe WCT Fiji surf contest

Florida's Kelly Slater moved to the top of the Association of Surfing Professionals rankings today by winning the Globe WCT Fiji surf contest at Tavarua.

Slater, a six-time world champion, defeated another former world champ and fellow Floridian, C.J. Hobgood, in the final.

Munro is second in the rankings, followed by Hobgood and three-time world champ Andy Irons of Kauai.

Two Hawaii surfers, Bruce Irons (Andy's brother) and Fred Patacchia Jr., lost in the semifinals. Patacchia is sixth in the rankings.

Rice earns second straight WAC cup

Rice University won the 2004-05 Western Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup for the second year in a row.

The Owls tallied 101 points in the cups standings, which rate the schools' athletic achievements.

Rice won three conference championships -- men's cross country, women's basketball and baseball.

Fresno State placed second with 92 points, followed by SMU with 75.5.

Hawaii was seventh out of 10 WAC schools with 66 points.

Honolulu Polo Club opens season Sunday

The Honolulu Polo Club opens its season Sunday at the Waimanalo polo field.

Gates open at 1 p.m., and games begin at 2:30.

General admission is $3, and admission for children 12 and under is free.
