Irons, Patacchia win heats, advance at Tavarua

World champion Andy Irons of Hawaii won his first-round heat to advance all the way to the third round at the Globe WCT Fiji surf contest yesterday at Tavarua.

Hawaii's Fred Patacchia also won his heat yesterday, and Sunny Garcia and Bruce Irons (Andy's brother) also moved on to the third round by placing second in their heats. Hawaii's Kalani Robb finished third yesterday and advanced to the second round.

6 teams win USTA league section titles

Six senior tennis teams won USTA league sectional titles in Koloa on Kauai to advance to the nationals.

The Makawao Slice Girls (3.0), Menace Tennis (3.0), Racquet Rebels (3.5), Kold Pac (3.5), Varsity Seasiders (4.0) and Team Makoa (4.0) are the championship teams.

Short captures Mamala Bay club championship

Tom Short shot an 8-over 224 to capture the Mamala Bay Golf Course's 54-hole Club Championship yesterday.

Short beat Phil Chambers by two strokes. Ron Batten (A Flight), Dennis Young (B) and Don Eanes (C) also won titles.

Honu Half Ironman coming up Sunday

The Honu Half Ironman Triathlon is Sunday on the Big Island.

The race, a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run, starts at 7 a.m. For more information, call (808) 329-0063.
