Hawaii surfers advance in Fiji

Kauai's Bruce and Andy Irons won their third-round heats yesterday to set up a showdown between the brothers in the Globe WCT Fiji pro surfing event.

Bruce Irons won his heat against Australia's Richard Lovett 19.13-12.00, and Andy Irons defeated Peter Menida 19.07-12.76 in the following heat. The brothers will meet in the fourth round with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.

A third Hawaii surfer will join them in the fourth round. The meet was postponed before a third-round heat featuring Fred Patacchia and Sunny Garcia. The winner advances to face Joel Parkinson of Australia.

Short leads club championship

Tom Short carded a 2-under-par 70 yesterday to take a one-shot lead into today's final round of the Men's 54-hole Club Championship at Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Phil Chambers is second in the championship flight with a two-day total of 148. Robert Szymaszek is third at 154.

Ran Batten leads the A flight at 155, Dennis Young leads the B flight at 162, and Ben Yamzon leads the C flight at 175.
