'Taste of Hawaii'

The Rotary Club of Kapaa Foundation is hosting its 17th annual "Taste of Hawaii" event from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday at Smith's Tropical Paradise.

More than 40 of Hawaii's most distinguished chefs, from all islands, will be presenting samples of their most delicious gourmet entrees and desserts. Additional booths will offer fine wines, micro-brewed beer, soft drinks, juices and water.

Some of Kauai's best musical groups will perform throughout the event at shaded outdoor resting spots and a large pavilion where guests may also sample ice creams and desserts and visit the silent auction, open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets are available before the event from any Rotary Club of Kapaa member, from a number of outlets throughout Kauai or by calling 808-246-0857. Advance purchase tickets are $75, or pay $80 at the gate. Funds raised will support the Rotary's many charitable projects on Kauai.

MAUI
Canoe makers honored

The International Festival of Canoes is collaborating with the Maui Arts & Cultural Center to present the art exhibition "Pacific Voyagers, Canoes," continuing through next Sunday in the Schaefer International Gallery.

The display showcases previous festivals with cultural artworks by master carvers from Hawaii, Polynesia, Micronesia, New Zealand (Aotearoa), the Pacific Northwest and Japan. In addition to full-size canoes from the islands, the exhibit features paddles and tools used in their making. Hawaiian drums carved in the ancient style and other intricate Polynesian carvings will also be on display, along with photographs and a video by Masako Cordray of Maui, who has captured the essence of the festival and its carvers for the past five years.

Today is the last day of the festival, taking place in Lahaina at Kamehameha Iki Park and Banyan Tree Park, both on Front Street. For more information, call 808-667-9175 or visit www.MauiCanoeFest.com.
