Free concert features award-winning singer

The New Hope Oahu church is presenting a free concert Friday, featuring national award-winning recording artist Nicole C. Mullen.

It will be held at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center.

Seating will be first come, first served. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7 p.m.

Mullen will join the church for weekend services at Stan Sheriff Center next Saturday at 5 p.m. and June 5 at 8 and 11 a.m.

Mullen won Best Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2005 Dove Awards. Her hit songs include "Redeemer" and "Call on Jesus," and her latest is "Everyday People," from the album of the same name which won Urban Album of the Year at the Dove Awards.

Evangelist offers music and fellowship

Sal Solo, international Christian recording artist, will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Wahiawa. Fellowship will follow the concert.

Solo has been on a tour of the neighbor islands, and this will be his only appearance on Oahu. Besides being a singer, he is a keynote speaker, evangelist and worship leader.

His songs have sold millions around the world, earning gold and silver awards. His videos have appeared on MTV and VH1. He has presented award-winning radio shows, written for newspapers and published a book for teens.

In the past four years, he has appeared at 40 youth rallies and has sung in 35 countries.

4 students earn Holmes scholarships

The Windward United Church of Christ has awarded its Holmes Living Memorial Trust scholarships to four students.

Crystal Arnote, a Punahou senior, will major in biomedical engineering at Texas A&M University; Valerie Galluzzi, a Punahou senior, will pursue computer science at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts; Emily Gammon is graduating from Kalaheo High School and will attend DePaul University to major in communications; and David Nishimoto of Kalaheo will study early childhood education at Longwood University in Virginia.

The trust was established in 1970 to honor the memory of the Rev. Jerome Holmes, former pastor of the church, and his wife, Eva.

The church will celebrate its annual Holmes Sunday on June 12 to remember the Holmeses and honor its Hawaiian heritage.
