"JET SETTERS" IN MANOA: Jeff Peterson, left, caught up with Ryan Luskin, center, and Michael Baskin at Candice McGuire's birthday party in Manoa on Saturday. Peterson gave the guests an unexpected treat by bringing a pre-release copy of his next album, "Slack Key Jazz," representing an imaginative step forward for him. Luskin joked that he and Baskin were "jet setters" because they had flown in from Maui for the party and would be flying home right after the party.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CANDICE!: Birthday girl, Candice McGuire, got lots of leis from her friends and a big surprise from boyfriend Tim McDevitt, when she celebrated her 24th birthday in Manoa on Saturday. Tulips are McGuire's favorite flower, and although they may not be hard to find on the mainland, they're not as common in Hawaii. McDevitt arranged with a local florist to have two dozen tulips flown in from the mainland as an extra surprise gift in time for the party. McGuire found out about the big "tulip lift" before McDevitt could surprise her, but was still thrilled to get them. Tulips generally open during the day, she said, but many of hers opened during the party.
