Maekawa is medalist at U.S. Open qualifier

Sean Maekawa of Paauilo shot a 1-under 69 at the Waikoloa Beach golf course to take medalist honors at the USGA's qualifier for the U.S. Open yesterday.

Maekawa, a sophomore at Honokaa High School and reigning Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, advanced to sectional qualifying at Kaanapali's North Course on June 6.

KC Botelho of Honokaa also qualified for the sectional by placing second with a 2-over 72.

Kailua-Kona pro John Lynch (73) is the first alternate. Former Punahou standout Parker McLachlin (74), a pro now living in Scottsdale, Ariz., is the second alternate.

Lynch is the current Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year. McLachlin, who won the Kona Open on Sunday, was the sectional qualifier from Hawaii last year and advanced to the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island in New York.

This year's U.S. Open is June 16-19 at Pinehurst, N.C.

» Mike Moynahan has been named the Professional Clubmakers' Society Regional Clubmaker of the Year.

He earned his award at the 14th annual PCS International Symposium and Expo in Louisville, Ky.

Moynahan owns Kamaaina Clubmakers in Kula, Maui, which specializes in building custom-made golf clubs as well as club repair.

Baseball evaluation at Mililani in June

Baseball Mentoring Program Inc. is running a college recognition showcase for high school and junior college baseball players.

The event is at Mililani High School on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Evaluation of players will be done by scouts and former pro and college players.
