DECONTAMINATION EXERCISE

Members of the 93rd Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team prepared for a mock decontamination during a civilian and military terrorist training exercise yesterday at the Waipio Soccer Complex. The drill evaluated the response and accuracy of the radioactive survey unit, along with the support of county, state and federal agencies.




HECO offers free hurricane guide

Hawaiian Electric Co. is providing a free consumer guide to emergency preparedness for this hurricane season, including safety tips, important phone numbers, an emergency supply checklist, suggested power outage procedures, and references to emergency agencies.

The information is available online at the company's Web site, www.heco.com, in an information handbook available at the Ward Avenue and King Street customer service locations, or by calling 543-7511.

The National Weather Service predicts a relatively mild hurricane season for Hawaii, but HECO urges residents to stay informed and have an emergency plan.

$744,600 granted to aid juveniles

The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded two Hawaii law enforcement agencies a combined $744,600 in grants, according to U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo.

The Department of Human Services, Office of Youth Services, received $354,600 to improve the juvenile justice system, while the Department of the Attorney General received $390,000 to investigate and prevent crimes against children.

The Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women is recruiting to fill its executive director position.

The commission's mission is to ensure equality for women and girls through advocacy, education, collaboration and program development.

The commission has supported Women's Health Month every September and the establishment of the Federal Self Sufficiency Standard in Hawaii. It is also a leader in the national Teen Dating Violence Prevention Initiative.

Maui resort aims to redevelop land

WAILUKU » The owner of the 125-unit Aston Maui Lu Resort in Kihei has proposed redeveloping the property and building a 400-unit time share complex.

The San Diego-based Genesee Capital is seeking a special management area permit from the Maui Planning Commission at a public hearing on July 12.

The proposal for the 26-acre property also includes a beach renourishment project of 6,000 cubic yards of sand on the oceanside of its land, makai of South Kihei Road.

Man arrested for alleged sex assault

Police charged yesterday a 39-year-old man with no local address for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman who is a family acquaintance.

The woman alleged she was forcibly taken from her home and sexually assaulted at about 1 a.m. May 20 in Alewa Heights.

Police arrested Paul Teo on a warrant 3 p.m. Sunday at Anianiku and Kapahu streets in Makiki. Teo was charged with first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping. His bail was set at $100,000.

Man critically injured in Kapiolani accident

A 35-year-old man was in extremely critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Kapiolani Boulevard in McCully last night, according to an Emergency Medical Services supervisor.

The accident occurred shortly before 8:56 p.m. yesterday. The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of Kapiolani from Hoawa to Paani streets while police conducted an investigation of the accident.

Tourist, 50, drowns off Poipu Beach

A 50-year-old Mississippi visitor apparently drowned while snorkeling about noon Sunday at Poipu Beach, according to the Kauai Fire Department.

Lifeguards with the Ocean Safety Bureau found the man unconscious on the beach near the Waiohai Hotel and tried to revive him using a defibrillator and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The man, identified as Gary Hollis, was taken by ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Woman arrested for credit card theft

Police arrested a 27-year-old woman on a number of offenses Sunday after she allegedly stole a tourist's identity then used her credit cards to buy merchandise in Waikiki.

The suspect managed to obtain the 41-year-old victim's carry bag and wallet and then her California driver's license and hotel room swipe-card key to steal things from the victim's hotel room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. After stealing personal items belonging to the victim, the suspect then went to two stores in Waikiki and used two of the victim's credit cards to buy merchandise.

After an investigation, police were able to track down the suspect who had the merchandise and stolen property on her. She was arrested for investigation of first-degree burglary, credit card theft, second- and third-degree theft, two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, two counts of forgery, and two counts of identity theft.

Police seek suspect in Waikiki robbery

Police are asking for the public's help in finding a man who robbed a Waikiki convenience store Monday morning.

Police said the suspect walked into the store at 160 Liliuokalani Ave. about 10:30 a.m. Displaying a handgun, the man demanded money and fled on foot. The suspect's clothing was found behind the Radisson Hotel.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20s, 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 120 to 140 pounds, with short black hair and a black goatee, wearing a black baseball cap, sunglasses, a green long-sleeved T-shirt and long denim pants.
