The U.S. Coast Guard kicked off Safe Boating Week yesterday at Kalihi-Waena Elementary School, giving students a chance to play games, try on life jackets and learn boating rules. MANOA ELEMENTARY MARKS
ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Manoa Elementary School celebrated its 150th anniversary yesterday with a luau, games, historical displays and other events. The school, founded Oct. 11, 1854, was one of only 12 schools established by the Territorial Legislature in the Kingdom of Hawaii. Above, this group photograph from 1940, as well as other photos, were on display as part of the event. A sign asked that anyone who knew any of the students in the photo to notify Manoa Elementary.

1st Lt. Toshio Aoyagi, left, a Korean War veteran, and Spc. Dennis Fujii, Vietnam War helicopter door gunner, were inducted yesterday into the U.S. Army Museum's gallery of heroes, which honors Hawaii residents who have been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Medal of Honor.
