Kahiko contest

The Hawaii Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition will take place at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Punahou School's Hemmeter Fieldhouse, with middle and high school students from 17 public and private schools performing ancient hula in kane, wahine and hui 'ia (combined) categories.

The event, co-sponsored by Punahou and the Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society, Inc., allows students to demonstrate their skill and knowledge and receive cultural training unavailable in their curriculum, while fostering school pride.

Participating middle schools: Kamehameha (Kapalama and Maui), King, Kohala, Mililani, Punahou and Wahiawa.

Participating high schools: Baldwin, Farrington, Kamehameha, Kailua, Lutheran, Mid-Pacific Institute, Mililani, Punahou and Sacred Hearts.

Healthy planet

Recycling can be fun. Bring your cans and bottles to the "Sunset in the Parking Lot Recycling Party" at 21 Oneawa St. across from Zippy's in Kailua, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

You will be rewarded with entertainment by Buckz Boyz and Bugs Derf, presented by the Hawaii Junior Volleyball Club, and a movie at sunset. Call 263-9872 for more information.

Desert rose focus

The Cactus Club of Hawaii is holding a plant and exhibit sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Ward Warehouse, featuring the adenium, or desert rose.

Arrice early for the best selection of whites, giant blood reds, bicolors, tricolors and more.

There also will be a 10 a.m. demonstration on grafting, pollination and general culture of the desert rose.

Natural cleaning

The Green House group will be making natural household cleaning formulas from 10 a.m. to noon May 28.

Many of the ingredients used are items that can be found at the supermarket, natural food store or Costco. The solutions are safe, effective and cost-efficient.

Bring empty spray bottles and containers to fill with samples of cleaners. The class will be at 224 Pakohana St. in Pauoa Valley. Cost is $10, or $5 for students.

Paint like a pro

Learn to create paint finishes like a pro with Belle Arts Faux Studio's Fast Faux Workshop on May 28.

The 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. session will cover single- and multi-glazing, application for textural effects, basic color mixing and more, including proper room and wall preparation and basic product information.

The class will be held at the Belle Arts Faux Studio, 1051 Keolu Drive #104A in Kailua. Cost is $150.

Finishing seminar

Here's a course designed for the painting contractor, beginner to intermediate faux finisher and artist.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. class runs from June 9 to 11 and is the foundation of the Belle Arts Faux Studio's faux finishing curriculum. The three-day workshop covers single and multi-glazing, stains, textures, various plasters, stenciling, leather and more. Discussions will include business information and tips and tricks of the trade. Participants will train on professional practice boards to include as samples for their portfolio.

Cost is $595. Classes will be held at the Belle Arts Faux Studio, 1051 Keolu Drive #104A in Kailua.

Buy bonsai

The Pacific Bonsai Club will showcase its best at its annual bonsai plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 12 at the John H. Wilson Elementary School, 4945 Kilauea Ave. in Waialae/Kahala. Admission is free.
