Kauai holds slim lead
at state golf tourney

Kauai senior Cory French shot a 2-over-par 74 and finished the first round of the David S. Ishii Foundation Boys Golf State Championship in a three-way tie for the individual lead.

French also helped the Red Raiders to a three-stroke team lead over second-place Punahou at the Wailea Emerald Golf Course on Maui.

Kauai, the defending state champion, is at 22-over-par 310 going into today's second and final round. The Red Raiders are going after their fourth state championship since the tournament began in 1966.

The Buffanblu, who are trying for their first state title since 1997 and sixth overall, are two strokes ahead of third-place King Kekaulike, which is at 315.

Iolani junior Shunsuke Aonuma and Kamehameha's Thomas Kua are tied with French for the individual lead.
