New driver’s license
shown online

Question: I am the head cashier at a local market in Waimanalo. Where can I get a sample copy of the new Hawaii driver's license? HPD said for folks 21 and over, the license is now printed normally (horizontal), but for those under 21, it is printed vertically. My cashiers ask for ID frequently and need to be able to distinguish between the authentic ones and the fakes.

Answer: You can find samples of the new driver's licenses on the Web site: www.honolulu.gov/csd/vehicle/dlinformation.htm

Click on "here" in the third paragraph.

Although the size of the licenses are the same, licenses and permits for drivers under 21 are printed vertically, with "Under 21 until (whenever)" printed in red across the top.

The new licenses were designed to prevent identity theft and meet standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

In addition to having more accurately colored photos, all licenses have a pinkish strip across the top and green-colored signatures. There's also a Hawaiian flag at the top right and two photos of the driver, a large one at the top left of the card and a "ghost image" on the right or bottom.

The reverse side of licenses and permits have also been changed, now featuring a two-dimensional bar-code with the data contained on the front of the license and explanations of any restrictions and codes.

A new statewide computer/camera licensing system is in place at all driver licensing stations on Oahu.

Q: Regarding renewing driver's licenses: Instead of my Social Security card, can I just bring my birth certificate? If we do need a Social Security card, where can we get a new one?

A: The city will accept several documents as proof of your Social Security number, none of them a birth certificate.

Acceptable documents are: The original card (no copies or metal plates); a driver's license with your Social Security number and photo; a state of Hawaii ID card with photo; either a military ID card or DD-214; a Medicaid ID card (Suffix A only); or an income tax return form W-2.

Your name and Social Security number must match your present and legal name. Other documents may be required in some cases.

Check www.honolulu.gov/csd/vehicle/dlrequirements.htm to find out more about the general requirements for new licenses, renewals or duplicate licenses and permits.
