HTY gearing up for
summer courses
Honolulu Theatre for Youth is accepting applications for its summer courses:
"Stage One 2005: A SPACE ODYSSEY": Children ages 7 to 12 will focus on movement, improvisation and team-building as they develop an original play. Performances will be July 20 and 21. Classes will be led by Jonathan Sypert and Frances Mamana.
Stage Two: Teens ages 13 to 18 will produce two Greek plays, exploring Greek chorus work, movement and characterization. Performances will be July 19 and 20. Classes will be led by Hester Kamin and R. Kevin Doyle.
Classes run six weeks, on weekdays from June 15 to July 22, at Temple Emanu-El. Stage One tuition is $500; classes are 1 to 4:30 p.m.; Stage Two tuition is $550; classes are 1 to 5 p.m. A $75 per-child discount applies for siblings. Scholarships available. HTY auditions
Honolulu Theatre for Youth is holding auditions May 26 and 27 for productions in its 2005-2006 season.
HTY is a professional company; actors must be able to work full time during the day. The company rehearses and performs six days a week.
Six or seven performers will form a core company, with each performer offered a 9- or 10-month contract. Single-show contracts are offered to others.
The seven productions for next season include four that will tour the neighbor islands and one -- "Nothing is the Same" -- that will tour Seattle.
Actors should prepare two contrasting monologues of two minutes or less and one song to be performed without accompaniment.
Auditions will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. To schedule an audition call 839-9885.
Roles are available as follows:
"Nothing is the Same": Story of four children who observe the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Three male, one female; rehearsals start in August with performances September through November.
"Winnie the Pooh": A musical. Five actors (no specified gender); rehearsals in September with performances October through December.
"Mulan: The Woman Warrior": Three actors, at least one female, will also perform in "Pooh." Rehearsals in September and October with performances through December.
"Christmas Talk Story": Singing and storytelling. Three male and female roles; rehearsals in November with performances through December.
"Othello": Rap and dance involved. Three males, one female; rehearsals in January with performances in February and March.
"Tales of Old Hawai'i": One or two actors needed; rehearsals begin in March with performances in May.
"Go, Dog. Go!": Very physical comedy. Six actors, no specified gender; rehearsals in March with performances in May.
