HAWAII
Chefs will cook up taste of aquaculture

Some of Hawaii's best chefs will be on hand May 25 at the sixth annual Hawaii Aquaculture Conference to help people get a taste, so to speak, of one of Hawaii's leading industries.

Chefs from Sam Choy's, Jackie's Kitchen and Indigo will present dishes they've prepared at a special reception called "Taste of Hawaii Aquaculture."

The conference also will feature sessions for both startup and advanced aquaculture operations and discussions about ornamental fish, food production and the future of Hawaii's aquaculture industry.

The event will run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Windward Community College. Admission is $45 for Hawaii Aquaculture Association members, $60 for nonmembers, and $20 for students. The fee covers all technical sessions as well as breakfast, lunch, refreshments and the reception.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, after which there will be a $10 late fee added.

For more information, call Dean Toda of the state Aquaculture Development Program at 587-0030 or e-mail info@hawaiiaquaculture.org.

Free expo will offer business tips

The Sugar Mill Incubator LLC in Waialua will host a Small Business Resource Expo June 28 to help business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs learn more about doing business in Hawaii.

Presenters at the free event will include representatives from Bank of Hawaii, Central Pacific Bank, the North Shore Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The event will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 67-202 Kupahu St., where Sugar Mill Incubator, owned by Rex and Christina Regal, offers office space and consulting services to business start-ups.

For more information, about either attending or participating, call Christine Regal at 637-2466, or e-mail events@sugarmillinc.com.

IRS has openings for collectors

The Internal Revenue Service is looking for a few good tax collectors.

The federal agency is accepting applications through June 27 for the position, which technically goes by the title of "revenue officer," and for which openings are available nationwide, including Honolulu.

People selected for the job will take classes in tax law, business law, investigative techniques and enforcement procedures -- "all designed to prepare the revenue officer as rapidly as possible for independent performance," the agency said in a job announcement.

"For the revenue officer, no two days will be alike," the agency added.

Annual pay for the position ranges from $34,149 to $38,634 -- before taxes.

The only requirement for applicants is that they be U.S. citizens.

The anticipated start date for the position is Oct. 17.
