Hawaii starter Justin Costi lasted just 2 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season, as the Bulldogs knocked the junior right-hander out with a four-run third inning.

Doug Fister and Rudy Quinonez combined to hold the Rainbows to seven hits before the biggest crowd of the season, 3,299 at Les Murakami Stadium.

"They had a great plan. From the get-go, they laid off Justin's changeup and he wasn't throwing it for strikes. A pitcher like Justin needs three pitches," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.

Hawaii (25-24, 12-11 WAC) can win its third consecutive three-game series with a victory in today's 1 p.m. home finale.

"We didn't make the plays defensively and didn't make the pitches. Still, the feeling in this dugout was we were going to win right up to the final out. That would not have been the case a few weeks ago.

"We can still take the series and stay within striking distance of Rice. We just got beat tonight, but this team is still playing with confidence."

The Bulldogs (26-26, 12-11), who had a runner in scoring position in the first two innings but did not get on the scoreboard, found Costi's offerings very hittable in the third inning.

After Todd Sandell lined out to left-center, Christian Vitters singled to right and stole second. Kent Sakamoto walked on a full count.

Nick Moresi singled sharply to left, scoring Vitters, with Sakamoto stopping at second. Beau Mills ripped the first pitch off first baseman Adam Roberts' glove for a single as Sakamoto scored and Moresi raced around to third.

A wild pitch sent Moresi home and advanced Mills to second. Mills scored on Chase Moore's first-pitch, line-drive double to the alley in left-center for a 4-0 FSU lead.

Erik Ammon's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in Derek Dupree for Hawaii's last run of the night.

When Steve Susdorf ripped a 3-1 pitch off the glove and between the legs of third baseman Schafer Magana, Trapasso had seen enough. Rich Olsen came in from the bullpen and retired the side.

"It just wasn't my day," said Costi. "They hit me hard. I hit some of my spots, but they ripped it. I didn't hit some of my spots and they ripped it. You have to tip your hat to them. They did a good job."

Meanwhile the 'Bows, who went quietly without a hit in the first three innings against Fister, started the fourth with consecutive singles by Erik Ammon, Isaac Omura, Nate Thurber and Magana that produced one run.

Omura would score and Thurber would take third on Matt Inouye's fielder's choice grounder to second. Fister then did a pump fake to third and caught Inouye leaning the wrong way off first. However, Sakamoto, the FSU first baseman, had his high throw glance off the glove of shortstop Vitters, allowing Thurber to score, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 4-3.

That was the only bad inning Fister had in the 6 2/3 he worked.

"Fister has some deception with his height (6-foot-8) and long arms. His pitches are a foot closer and he had a good slider tonight," said Trapasso.

Moresi and Mills hit consecutive doubles to center and left-center, respectively, to start the fifth giving the Bulldogs a 5-3 advantage.

FSU upped its lead to 7-3 in the sixth. Ryan Overland singled to left on the first pitch from Olsen. When Sandell walked, Trapasso went to the pen for Steven Wright.

Vitters popped up to catcher Esteban Lopez trying to sacrifice, but Sakamoto brought both runners home with a triple to right field.

Derek Dupree's one-out single to left led to a UH run in the seventh. He stole second, took third on Spiers' groundball to first and scored on Ammon's single to center.

Notes: The Chuck Leahey award, presented in recognition of outstanding service to the sport of baseball in Hawaii, will be given out prior to today's game. ... Prior to last night's game, Bert Kobayashi Jr., the president of 'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, was presented with the Charlie Rainbow Service Award.
