WAILUKU » Baldwin held off Maui High for a 3-2 victory last night to clinch its sixth straight Maui Interscholastic League baseball title.
The Bears appeared headed for a relatively easy victory, taking a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh.
But Baldwin starter Derrick Saito, who had limited the Sabers to only four hits over the first six innings, ran into major problems in the final frame -- partly of his own making and as a result of a critical error on a routine throw that was dropped at first.
Those letdowns allowed the Sabers to pull to within one run.
The senior left-hander finally worked his way out of the jam, getting the final out on a checked-swing strikeout on a 3-2 count and with the bases loaded.
Both teams advance to the state tournament next week at Les Murakami Stadium.
