Kaiser's Sharde Pratt and Roosevelt's Tati Beasley fought for a loose ball during last night's game.

Kaiser, Kahuku
in final

Jaime Nerona saved her best game of the season for the right time.

The senior guard's near-flawless floor leadership sparked Kaiser to a surprisingly easy 63-41 win over Roosevelt in the semifinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs at Kahuku's Thomas Walker Gym.

Nicole Lehner exploded for another big game, scoring 26 points to lead all scorers. The quick senior guard went 8-for-16 from the floor and 9-for-9 from the line.

Nerona had just seven points, one assist and one turnover, but her ability to read Roosevelt's zone, man-to-man and trapping defenses was a major factor in setting up her teammates for success.

"We were patient. Today was good," Nerona said.

Kaiser coach Lisa Mann was quite pleased.

"Jaime has gained a lot of confidence this season and it shows," she said.

Sharde Pratt made all five of her field-goal attempts and finished with 16 points. The 5-foot-9 junior also grabbed six rebounds.

Kaiser (17-7 overall, including preseason) advanced to the title game against Kahuku, which will be played Friday at McKinley Student Council Gym.

"Wow, it feels good," Mann said.

The blowout was a far cry from the two regular-season matchups between the teams. Kaiser won those by margins of one and six points.

"My girls came out confident. It's just experience," Mann said of her five senior starters.

Roosevelt (13-14 overall, including preseason) will play in the third-place game Friday, also at McKinley.

The eighth-ranked Lady Cougars arrived late to the gym after their bus arrived at Kaiser late for pickup. The delay didn't matter, though. Kaiser stormed to a 13-2 lead, dissecting Roosevelt's 2-3 zone.

"The maturity definitely showed today," Mann said. "On the bus, we talked about being calm. We know what to expect against a tough team like Roosevelt."

Kaiser extended the lead to 28-11 by the end of the first half, working patiently against zone and man defenses. Roosevelt seemed lethargic, shooting just 5-for-19 from the field with eight turnovers against Kaiser's 2-3 zone.

After shooting 59 percent in the first half, the Lady Cougars stretched the lead to 45-21. Roosevelt's 2-3 zone trap had little effect on Kaiser, which made six of its eight field-goal attempts in the third.

Kaiser was exceedingly good at the foul line, shooting 26-for-30 (87 percent). That included 14-for-16 accuracy in the final quarter.

As a team, the Lady Cougars shot 54 percent for the game (18-for-33). They also outrebounded Roosevelt 24-17.

Shannon Miyashiro scored 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting to pace Roosevelt. Tati Beasley added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Kahuku 69, Farrington 42

The host Lady Raiders dominated the glass and shot 53 percent from the field (26-for-49) en route to the lopsided win and a spot in the OIA final against Kaiser.

Fourth-ranked Kahuku outrebounded Farrington 33-13.

"Just the size and rebounding advantage they had took over," Govs coach Jenic Tumaneng said.

Tina Soliai scored 13 points, hitting all eight of her free-throw tries, and Aisha Ale had 12 points and six boards in limited minutes. Artevia Wily tallied 11 points and Camilla Ah-Hoy scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter.

"Milla hit some key baskets early on. It's hard to defend us when we're scoring from the outside," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said.

C'ani Kealoha led Farrington (15-9) with 12 points, all in the first 12 minutes as the Lady Govs were within 28-24. Kahuku closed out the first half with an 11-0 run to start the runaway.

"We just didn't have someone to match up with (Ale)," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said.

Ale deflected the attention. "It's not just me. That's the great thing about our team," the energetic 5-foot-9 center said.
