The new executive secretary of the Neighborhood Commission said the recently completed neighborhood board elections were an opportunity to recruit new faces to the 23-year-old neighborhood board system.
"If you really want change for your government ... you have to participate in your neighborhood board. You have to know what's going on in your community," Baybee Hufana-Ablan said.
A total of 389 members were elected to Oahu's 32 neighborhood boards, according to results released recently.
Hufana-Ablan said the effort to increase participation in the neighborhood board process can already be seen in the election results, with some incumbents not being re-elected and newcomers getting in.
In one of the subdistricts of the Ala Moana/Kakaako Neighborhood Board No. 11, new candidate Marilyn A. Michaels won one of the two seats for Subdistrict 3, while incumbents John Breinich and Duane Komine tied for the second seat. Normally, a tie would be broken by drawing straws, but Komine withdrew from the race last week, making Breinich, the current board chairman, winner of the second seat.
Hufana-Ablan said one of her goals when she became executive secretary was to introduce more people to the neighborhood boards, and she hopes that push will also attract new faces to the 55 seats that no one ran for.
The seats will be filled by the boards on which the vacancy exists. Those interested in applying for the volunteer positions should contact the respective board chairmen.
A total of 444 seats were up for election, with 225 contested races and 164 uncontested races. A total of 194,282 ballots were mailed out, and about 25 percent, or 48,025, ballots were returned.
The Neighborhood Commission will certify the results at its meeting tomorrow.
An installation ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Honolulu Hale courtyard.
Board members serve a two-year term beginning June 1.
