Iolani's Charles Fasi cleared 13-feet, 6-inches in the pole vault yesterday en route to winning the event with a final clearance of 14-6.

Buffanblu, Warriors
run wild

Generations of spectacular athletes have called Punahou and Kamehameha home.

The Buffanblu girls and Warrior boys track and field teams were as dominating yesterday as many of their predecessors. Both squads steamrolled to their third straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship at the Kamehameha oval.

This time, though, they did it with lots of stars but no superstars. Kamehameha's boys, with 180 points, and Punahou's girls, with 186.67, easily outdistanced their competition. Punahou's boys with 110 and Pac-Five's girls with 106 were second.

The individual highlights came from Pac-Five's Lauren Ho, who won the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters, Hoala's Mykah Norville, who nearly did the same, and record breakers Anna Hildebrand of Punahou in the pole vault and Careena Onosai of Word of Life in the discus.

The winning teams had their share of first-place finishers, but were symbolized more by events like the boys 100 meters, where Kamehameha scooped the most points by placing 2-4-5-6.

"This is a team of blue-collar workers," Kamehameha coach Sam Moku said, after several athletes stepped up with unexpected victories and placing performances. "We had a lot of good things happen that I didn't really plan for."

One was a stunning 1-2 finish in the 400 meters, where Joshua Guth and hobbled Parrish Brito both crossed in 52.25, and the next four runners were also timed in under 53.

Guth was given the win after lots of further review.

"I didn't mind. If my teammate can have it, I'm happy," said Brito, who is battling a "messed-up calf."

Jeremy Kamakaala (9:24.52 in the 3000), Anthony Taylor (22-63Ú4 long jump) and Kepa Gaison (52-7 1/2 shot put) also got first-place points for Kamehameha. So did the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

"I think they'll be able to carry it over to the state meet (next week) and do well," Moku said. "They're peaking at the right time."

Meanwhile, the defending state champion Punahou girls were also methodically dismantling the opposition from the beginning of the meet.

"We're blessed with good depth in several events," Buffanblu girls coach Duncan Macdonald said. "I'm real happy with the way we started out, with Talitha Liu winning the hurdles with a big p.r. (16.34) and Kim (Culver) taking the next event."

Pac-Five's Lauren Ho won three events yesterday.

Culver, a sophomore transfer from Maryknoll, won the 100 meters in 13.01 and later took the 200 in 26.63. She also ran legs on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Hildebrand pole-vaulted 10-6 to break her own meet record of 10-3 last year.

"She deserves a lot of credit for hard work, and her coach, Arnold Morgado, too," Macdonald said.

Onosai's discus throw of 137-4 eclipsed the old mark of 133-4 by Genia Linear from Iolani in 2001. Onosai also won the shot in 39-33Ú4.

Ho breezed in the 1,500 (4:47.99) and 800 (2:18.76), and then outlasted former state champion Nicole Anderson of Iolani in the 3,000 (10:37.88).

She didn't have enough left to make up a 15-meter difference against Punahou sophomore Marisa Schoen on the last lap of the 4x400.

"I looked back a few times even though I know I'm not supposed to," said Schoen, who was also second in the 800.

Chantel Franco of Pac-Five doubled in the 400 (59.60) and long jump (16.63Ú4).

Norville, one of 42 high school students at tiny Hoala in Wahiawa, did not successfully defend his 3,000 title, as Kamakaala out-kicked him. But he did win the 1,500 (4:09.28) and 800 (2:01.77), running outstanding tactical races in both. Norville took his only lead in the 1,500 in the last 30 meters, and came from the back of the pack after the first lap of the 800.

"I thought we'd go out a little slower (in the 1,500), but it usually plays out this way," Norville said. "The 800 is not my specialty, but I had a plan. I knew if I ran the first lap in 60 (seconds) I could win the race."

Damien's Manuel Benitez swept the hurdles, running 15.51 in the 110 and 41.50 in the 300.
