6 sign to play for Hawaii Pacific basketball

Six players -- two Division I transfers, three junior college players and one true freshman -- signed to play basketball for Hawaii Pacific.

The D-I transfers are 6-foot-5 Borko Popic, who spent his freshman year at Virginia Military Institute, and 6-2 point guard Kevin Schneider, who was at Longwood University last season.

The JC players are 6-4 Brandon Lee from Los Medanos (Calif.) Community College, 6-4 Adam Reinking from San Diego Mesa CC and 6-6 post Adam Snyder from Yuba CC.

Kevin Smith, a 6-6 forward from Alexandria, Ky., is the freshman.

» Travis Sobers, a 6-foot-2 point guard from Barstow (Calif.) Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Hawaii-Hilo next year.

Sobers averaged 7.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He had 66 assists and 41 steals in 25 games.

Jaguars' Owens is guest instructor at clinic

Jacksonville Jaguars draftee Chad Owens, just back from his first NFL minicamp, will be a guest instructor at this weekend's Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics.

The clinics are tomorrow and Sunday, with sessions for ages 7-12 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and 13 and older from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Hawaii gymnasts headed to nationals

Twelve Hawaii gymnasts are headed to national competitions after placing high at the USA Junior Olympic Regional championships in Whitefish, Mont.

Tamara Rapp, Amanda Pascual, Mandilyn Suzuki, Marsa Inoue, Emiko Ono and Rika Rossing compete starting today in the Western National Championships in St. Louis.

Randi Lau, Mawie Talion, Megan Harada, Tracie Tamashiro, Kara Mun and Naomi DeLare compete in the Junior Olympic National Championships starting May 13 in Ontario, Calif.

Seasiders capture 127th straight match

Brigham-Young Hawaii improved to 26-0 and won its 127th straight NCAA II women's tennis match yesterday, 5-0 over Cal Poly Pomona in the West Regional tournament final.

The Seasiders start the NCAA II tourney Wednesday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
