HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Attack on ref mars
Kalaheo’s win

Last night's win was supposed to cap a memorable weekend for the Kalaheo girls basketball team.

Instead, an unfortunate altercation involving a fan and a referee, as well as a potentially serious injury to Kalaheo guard Shantel Marumoto, will be all that is talked about.

Shanadee Canon scored 16 points and Taylor Smith added 14 as the sixth-ranked Mustangs clinched a share of the Oahu Interscholastic Association East title last night with a 72-57 victory over No. 8 Kaiser on senior night at Kalaheo.

But the final score was the last thing on the minds of players and fans alike after the game.

With 4:56 remaining in the third quarter, Marumoto attempted a layup on a fast break, but she lost her balance and hit the ground hard.

No foul was called, enraging Mustangs coach Chico Furtado, who was called for a technical foul for yelling at the officials as he went to tend to Marumoto.

While medical personnel were tending to Marumoto, a fan ran onto the court and shoved an official in the back, prompting a 40-minute delay in the game.

Another fan was later tossed from the gym after another altercation. The officials were not available for comment after the game, and the fan who shoved the referee left the gym shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, Marumoto was taken off the court on a stretcher. She was taken to the hospital and was undergoing X-rays when the game ended. The exact details of her injury were unknown.

"It was a bad no-call definitely," Furtado said after the game. "It's unfortunate that a no-call like that can change the atmosphere of the game like it did, but that's my problem with the referees. They're more concerned with the bench decorum, tucking in the shirts, things like that, than the safety of the kids and that's just not how it's supposed to be."

Eighty-four free throws were attempted in a game that saw four players foul out. In the end however, it was six straight points from Smith that helped seal the victory for Kalaheo.

"It wasn't overly physical compared to most games," Smith said. "Whether the refs are calling things or not, you just gotta play aggressively and that's what we tried to do."

Kalaheo constantly switched defenses, including mixing in halfcourt and fullcourt presses, to tire the Cougars down in the first half.

The Mustangs regularly rotated 11 players in and out of the game to wear down a Kaiser team that generally uses a six-man rotation.

"We know they're not deep, so we were just relentless in attacking them and hopefully wear them out," Smith said.

"That's how we handled them last time," Furtado said. "We wore them down with numbers and still had enough at the end to make a run. The momentum and flow of the game was completely different from this game obviously, but I was proud of how our kids responded."

The win moved Kalaheo (11-1) into a tie for first place with Kahuku in the division. A coin flip will determine who gets the No. 1 seed.

Kaiser (8-4), meanwhile, finished third.
