A listing of restaurant specials for Mother's Day was printed in Thursday's Star-Bulletin and will repeat in tomorrow's Today section.


Wine and dining

Padovani's Restaurant offers a trio of wine dinners in May. Each features a four-course dinner of appetizer-size portions paired with wines. Cost per dinner is $90 for three full glasses of wine, $75 for half-glasses, $55 without wines.

May 13 and 14: Grgich Hills Winery Wine Dinner features fume blanc, chardonnay and merlot from the Napa Valley wineries paired with Pan-fried Moi and a Beggar's Purse of Fresh Dungeness Crab.

May 20 to 21: Hess Collection Wine Dinner includes the Napa wineries chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon with Seafood Bisque and Cote de Boeuf.

May 27 to 28: Pinot Noir Dinner brings wines from Oregon, California and Burgundy, served with Pan-fried Scallops on a Bed of Mushrooms and Roasted Muscovy Duck Breast.

Padovani's also offers wine tastings at 6 p.m. Fridays. Cost is $20 for three half-glasses, $34 for three full glasses, including an appetizer.

The lineup for May: red wines of Napa Valley, Friday; Grgich Hills wines, May 13; zinfandels from Tres Sabores winery, May 20; red burgundies, May 27.

Indigo wine club

Mikael Sigouin of Beckmen Vineyards and Kaena Wine Co. will be the guest winemaker at Tuesday's session of the Wrath of Grapes wine club at the Indigo Eurasian Bistro.

Wines to be sampled include Beckmen's sauvignon blanc, marsanne, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and cuvˇe; plus the Kaena syrah and grenache.

The tasting begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $20, which includes light pupus. Call 521-2900.

Wine at the table

Kukui's Restaurant at the Kauai Marriott has introduced a Wine Lover's Table, an all-you-can-drink selection of wines to complement dinner menu items, as well as dishes from the buffet.

Tasting notes are provided with each wine.

The Wine Lover's Table is available from 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and costs an additional $14.95.

Seeking a modern
musubi champion

Are you a world-champion musubi-maker? Do you have a secret recipe for a rice-wrapped, portable bundle that's a sure-fire favorite? Enter our Memorial Day Musubi challenge. You could win a $50 dining certificate.

PARAMETERS

Musubi must be rectangular. Triangles and rounds will be disqualified.
Must include rice, although type of rice and flavorings are up to you.
Must be wrapped, although nori is not essential. Tortillas, greens, anything bendable qualifies.
Must include a solid main ingredient. Any meat is OK, or egg, tofu, grilled vegetables ... be creative. It can be placed on top, in the middle, or mixed in with the rice.

JUDGING

» Finalists must be able to deliver at least six samples of their musubi for tasting on Wednesday, May 18.
» Entries will be judged on creativity and good taste.

PRIZE

» The winner receives a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of his/her choice.
» Runners-up will receive cookbooks.

DEADLINE

Recipes must be in our hands by 5 p.m. May 11 .
