Owens and Warnock earn Bonham Award

Hawaii football player Chad Owens and women's sailor Jennifer Warnock were named today as winners of the Jack Bonham Award for their performances on and off the playing field.

Owens, the Warriors standout receiver and return specialist, is the school career leader in all-purpose yards (5,461), receptions (239) and punt return yards (1,014). The 2004 Mosi Tatupu award winner, who has a 2.93 grade-point average in sociology, was picked in the sixth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars in last weekend's NFL Draft.

Warnock is a five-time All-American for the nationally-ranked Rainbow Wahine. A four-year letter winner, she helped Hawaii to four straight appearances in the Women's, Team Racing, and Dinghy championships. She has a 3.1 GPA in elementary education.

The Jack Bonham award, named for the late UH assistant athletic director who was killed in a 1974 plane crash, is given to the top male and female student-athlete who "best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character."

Hawaii picks its 2004-05 scholar athletes

Hawaii honored 149 scholar-athletes at its annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

To qualify, each student-athlete needed to letter in a sport and have a 3.0 grade-point average.

Top scholar-athletes by sport are: Richard Olsen (baseball), Bobby Nash and Trisha Nishimoto (basketball), Justin Davis (cheerleading), Sharlene Carillo (cross country), Kenny Patton (football), Dale Gammie (golf), Maria Wong (sailing), Joelle Sugai (soccer), Tracie Uchima (softball), Andrew Affleck and Katie Clewett (swimming and diving), Bryon Weinberg and Kimberly Curtis (tennis), Patricia Gauthier (track and field), Matt Carere and Melody Eckmier (volleyball), and Colleen Schiman (water polo).

Seven UHH golfers gain PacWest honors

Seven Hawaii-Hilo golfers earned All-Pacific West Conference recognition.

Nick Mason, the PacWest tournament champion, was named as men's player of the year, and tourney runner-up Garrett Okamura and fourth-place finisher Colin Gilliam were chosen to the first team. Teammate Kevin Shimomura was a second-team pick.

PacWest women's tournament runner-up Kiilani Matsuyoshi of the Vulcans and fifth-place finisher Mineko Kanamoto made the first team, and teammate Kristen Higa was a second-team choice.

» The Aloha Section PGA's 18th annual Verizon Hall of Fame Championship is Saturday through Monday at The Village Course at Kapalua, Maui.

Professional golfers are vying for a $21,000 purse in the 36-hole stroke play tournament.

The tourney is run in conjunction with the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame.

Turbin places third in SCIAC triple jump

Hawaii's Derek Turbin of Occidental College placed third in the triple jump at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Pomona, Calif., recently.

Turbin also finished sixth in the long jump, and he was a member of the third-place 4-x-100 and fourth-place 4-x-400 relay teams.

Vulcans' Oda is West Region coach of year

Hawaii-Hilo tennis coach Kula Oda has been chosen as the NCAA II West Region men's coach of the year.

Oda coaches the Vulcans men's and women's teams. He guided both teams to Pacific West Conference tournament runner-up finishes.

The season continues for both teams in the West Regional Championships next week.

3 Hawaii gymnasts victorious in regionals

Three Hawaii gymnasts -- Tracie Tamashiro, Randi Lau and Rika Rossing -- took top honors in the West Regionals in Whitefish, Mont.

All three won the all-around titles in their age groups and were among many Hawaii gymnasts who qualified for the nationals next month in Ontario, Calif.
