WAC honors for University of Hawaii athletes

The Western Athletic Conference honored several athletes yesterday from the University of Hawaii.

» Senior Stephen Bryant was named pitcher of the week for his performance against San Jose State last Friday. The right-hander threw 8 2/3 innings, gave up two hits and struck out four to lead UH over the Spartans. The victory improved Bryant's record to 6-3 with a 2.78 earned-run average.
» Junior Novelle Murray was recognized for her showing in the Triton Invitational last weekend. The junior tossed the discus 177 feet, 11 inches to set a UH track team record. Her throw surpassed the old mark established by Joan Gago in 1983 by more than 6 feet and was also the best in the WAC this season.
» Lauren Fitzgerald was named to the All-WAC tennis first team. The senior ended her career at UH with 62 singles wins, including 20 this season, and 55 doubles victories.
» Freshman Kaulana Gould won player of the week honors in softball. The left fielder was 7-for-10 at the plate with a double and three RBIs last week. In WAC games this season, the 2004 Kamehameha graduate leads the Rainbow Wahine in batting average (.455), runs (13), triples (three), slugging percentage (.614), on-base percentage (.614) and multiple-hit games (six).

Hawaii seeded fourth in water polo tourney

The Hawaii water polo team is seeded fourth in this week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Berkeley, Calif.

The fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine finished tied for third with Stanford in the MPSF, but lost the tiebreaker to the Cardinal for a first-round bye. Hawaii (18-5) takes on Pacific in a first-round match Thursday.

The tourney continues through Saturday's championship.

The eight-team NCAA tournament is scheduled for May 13-15 at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Rainbow Wahine sailors place fourth

Hawaii's run of seven straight appearances in the women's sailing nationals came to an end when the Rainbow Wahine finished fourth in the Pacific Coast Championships at Stanford last weekend.

Hawaii was unable to defend its title, finishing 32 points behind the winning Stanford squad. The Cardinal finished with 64 points, 27 better than second-place USC.

Jennifer Warnock, Becky Mabardy, Renee DeCurtis and Cassie Harris combined to score Hawaii's 96 points.

Roosevelt's Fuller signs with Nebraska

Roosevelt senior Kimberly Fuller, a four-year starter at shortstop for the Rough Riders, has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Nebraska.

Fuller, daughter of former Farrington High School and University of Hawaii standout and assistant coach Gary Fuller, batted over .430 over the past two seasons while leading in most offensive categories at Roosevelt.

Fuller was also recruited by and received interest from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.

Vulcans honor Mason, Esene, Sing Chow

Nick Mason, Osadonor Esene and Leo Sing Chow are the 2004-05 athletes of the year at Hawaii-Hilo.

They were honored at the school's all-sports banquet last night.

Mason, a senior golfer, won the 55th annual Southern California Intercollegiate and the Pacific West Conference championships.

Esene was the PacWest basketball player of the year and was named to the NCAA II West Region team.

Sing Chow, a sophomore pitcher/designated hitter in softball, was a key player in the Vulcans' run to the PacWest crown. A Kamehameha alum, she led the team in batting (.409), slugging percentage (.409) and on-base percentage (.456). She was also tied for the team lead in home runs with six and she went 9-3 with a 1.89 ERA on the mound.

Hawaii Polo Club opener is May 15

The Hawaii Polo Club is celebrating its 40th year.

The opener at Mokuleia Polo Fields on Oahu's North Shore is May 15. The season continues every Sunday through Labor Day, Sept. 4. Gates open at 11 a.m. and games begin at 2 p.m.
