Leilehua's Joshua Pastor, right, dove to tag Waianae's Charles Low at second base during yesterday's OIA West game at Fred Wright Park.

Ontai helps Leilehua
tighten up OIA West race

On statistics alone, Waianae deserved to be a winner yesterday.

Baseball, however, is very much about timing and location. Andrew Ontai had a lot of both in Leilehua's 3-1 win over the Seasiders at Fred Wright Park.

Ontai used a slew of sneaky sliders, curveballs and fastballs to whiff 11 Waianae batters as Leilehua moved into a second-place tie in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West. The Mules (17-7) are 7-2 in league play, as are Waianae and Campbell.

Campbell knocked off Pearl City at the Chargers' field to make the race for second place much more interesting. The top two teams in the division will receive first-round byes in the playoffs.

Ontai was impressive with all his strikeouts and only one walk, but he wasn't flawless. He needed 103 pitches and allowed five hits -- big numbers compared to his counterpart, Ande Kuakini.

The Waianae hurler allowed just one earned run and two hits in seven innings. Using a tempting changeup, he fanned six and walked one, using an efficient 73 pitches. But again, timing and location belonged more to Ontai, who stretched the outside corner enough to catch most of his strikeout victims looking.

Each team had two errors, but Waianae's errors led to two Leilehua runs. Kuakini didn't get rattled.

John Munoz of Waianae swung and missed for one of Leilehua pitcher Andrew Ontai's 11 strikeouts yesterday.

"When people say the pressure's on, I don't get pressured, not in a close game like this," the right-hander said. "We'll learn from our mistakes and try to do better."

Ontai had an auspicious start, allowing two soft singles to shallow right. The second, by Kuakini, brought home Sonny Dudoit. Charles Low followed with yet another single to right, and after Clayton Uyechi drew a one-out walk, the bases were loaded.

Ontai escaped further harm. The junior right-hander induced Darius Fuller into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Leilehua coach Kevin Tosaka was relieved.

"Our last few games, we've been giving up four or five runs in the first inning. Coach (Tyler Cheff) has been working with our pitchers to be more prepared early on," Tosaka noted.

The Mules scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. John Olley, who led off with a single to center, came in to score when Waianae third baseman Ransen Sylva threw away a grounder off the bat of Melvin Ferreira.

The next batter, Kelsey Yoshikami, also reached base on another throwing error by Sylva. With two outs, Ferreira came in to score from third on a wild pitch by Kuakini.

Olley came through again in the fourth, leading off with a triple down the left-field line. Ferreira laid down a perfect safety-squeeze bunt, with Olley scoring easily to give the Mules a 3-1 lead.
