RAINBOWS BASEBALL
’Bows explode for
17 at San Jose
The Hawaii Rainbows put on an offensive show yesterday that produced the most runs and the second-highest hit total of the season.
The outburst backed a solid pitching performance by starter Colby Summer and two relievers in a 17-6 Western Athletic Conference victory over host San Jose State at Blethen Field.
The result gives the Rainbows (20-23 overall, 7-10 WAC) their first series win on the mainland this year. Hawaii also clinches the season series with the Spartans (20-17-1, 9-8) with four victories in the first five games.
The teams conclude their 2005 meeting with a game today starting at 9 a.m. Hawaii time.
Every Rainbow starter had at least one hit, just the second time UH has accomplished that this season. The first time was against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Joe Spiers led the 17-hit parade with three singles and a double. Matt Inouye had three doubles, tying the single-game UH record held by many players. Esteban Lopez and Isaac Omura had two hits and Schafer Magana climaxed the five-run sixth inning with a grand slam.
The 'Bows' previous high for runs was 15 in the first game against Florida State when they collected 19 hits.
Magana's homer, the second of his career, was the 24th grand slam in UH history. The last one was by Creighton Kahoali'i against Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 21, 2004.
The big innings were the fifth, sixth and seventh, when Hawaii scored four, five and six runs, respectively.
"It definitely has been a long while since we broke out offensively. It was a law-of-averages game, one of those games where we were swinging real well," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso. "It was one of those things where you figure you are due. You want to keep it going, but you never know what can happen."
It was a typical start for UH. The 'Bows loaded the bases with one out in the first, but managed only one run. They had a runner at third with one out in the second and did not score. They left two on base in the third and were retired in order by SJSU starter Branden Dewing in the fourth.
That all changed in the fifth after the Spartans took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Spiers singled to deep short. Dewing then walked Erik Ammon and Nate Thurber. Adam Roberts' two-out single to left brought in two runs. Roberts, heading to second on the throw home, came around to score for a 5-3 UH lead when Dewing threw the ball into left-center field.
"Roberts got the big hit and that got us fired up, that and the error that allowed him to score," said Trapasso.
The Rainbows put the game away in the seventh, an inning that began with five consecutive hits and ended with Inouye's second double of the inning.
Summer went seven innings, his longest outing of the year. The junior right-hander walked two, fanned two and gave up eight hits to win his second game of the year.
"It was hard for Colby the last couple of innings because he had to sit in the dugout so long. It is hard to keep your focus, but he was throwing strikes and that was the main thing," said Trapasso.
Magana's six runs batted in are a career high and the most by any Rainbow this year. It was the third time Spiers has had a four-hit game in 2005.
Junior right-hander Justin Costi (1-4, 3.63 earned run average) will start for UH today.
