Mason leads Vulcans to PacWest winHawaii-Hilo golfer Nick Mason fired a 3-under 68 in yesterday's final round of the Pacific West Championships to take the individual title with a three-day total of 10-under 203. He helped the Vulcans win the team title by 30 strokes at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.Montana State-Billings beat Western New Mexico by a stroke for second place. Hawaii Pacific came in fourth, followed by BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade. Mason beat out teammate Garrett Okamura by three strokes. » The Hilo women's team finished in second behind Western New Mexico, which was led by Katharine Dorris with a 14-over 227. Dorris bettered Hilo's Kiilani Matsuyoshi by four strokes to win the individual title. MSU-Billings placed third, followed by BYUH, Chaminade and HPU. » The Hawaii golf team finished sixth at the 20-team PING Golf Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Warriors shot a 5-under 283 in yesterday's final round to end at 11-under, 33 strokes behind event winner Fresno State. UH's Jarett Hamamoto finished in a tie for 12th with a three-round total of 209, while teammate Cody Wolfenbarger placed 17th with a score of 211. Mark Modglin won the individual title for Fresno State with a 202.
BYUH sweeps tennis championshipsThe Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team won its 126th consecutive dual match to win the PacWest Championship, defeating UH-Hilo yesterday, 5-0 in Laie.The Seasiders got wins on every court except the fifth to improve to 25-0. Adrienn Hegedus defeated Eve Vicquenault, 6-0, 6-0 for the only sweep. BYUH dropped one doubles match to the Vulcans in the Seasiders' 5-1 win to take the men's title. The BYUH men got wins on three singles courts, led by Leon So'onalole, who defeated Mitchel Gelina, 6-2, 6-2. The Vulcans' lone win came on in doubles, with Staffan Mortiz and Jeremy Moitry edging Dillon Porter and Junyoung Kim, 8-6. Both Seasider squads next head to the NCAA II West Regional tournament on May 6-7.
Sing Chow pitches Vulcans to titleHawaii-Hilo (36-6, 16-4 PWC) claimed the PacWest Championship with two shutouts of Hawaii Pacific (21-21, 12-6 PWC) yesterday at the UHH Softball Field, 8-0 and 11-0.UHH pitcher Leo Sing Chow pitched the championship-clinching first game, giving up three walks and three hits in five innings. She was aided by Lisa Jackson, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. In the second game, Sing Chow pitched 62/3 innings of relief in the win. » The Rainbow Wahine softball squad completed the sweep of Louisiana Tech, winning both of yesterday's games, 9-1 and 6-3, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Kaulana Gould led the 'Bows from the plate, going 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, driving in four runs.
Vitale to speak at QB clubSuperBrawl champion Niko Vitale, along with Olympic wheelchair athlete John Greer and former UH basketball player Fabio Ribeiro are the scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. The public is invited.
