Warrior tennis bounced by Mustangs

Despite wins on the Nos. 1 and 2 courts in singles play, the University of Hawaii men's tennis team (6-15) took an early exit from the Western Athletic Conference Championship yesterday, falling to third-seeded SMU 4-2 at the UH Tennis Complex.

After dropping the first point of the match with three losses in doubles play, the sixth-seeded Rainbow Warriors rallied to get wins from Dalibor Ptak and Bryon Weinberg. But the 'Bows lost the bottom three singles to give SMU the win. The Mustangs advanced to today's semifinal round and play No. 2 Rice. In the other semifinal, top seed Boise State faces No. 4 Tulsa.

» In the women's WAC Championship, Iolani alum Tracie Chong got the 6-4, 7-5 decision over Boise State's Nadja Woschek, helping Rice defeat the Broncos 4-0. Chong also won her doubles match, 8-3. Rice now advances to the final round and will take on four-time WAC champion Fresno State.

» The Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams each dominated their opponents to move into the finals of the Pacific West Conference Tournament in Laie. The Seasider men defeated Hawaii Pacific, 5-1 to improve to 21-5. The Seasiders will face second-seeded UH Hilo in both finals today.

The Vulcans swept all six singles matches to defeat Montana State-Billings, 6-0. No UHH player dropped a single game in the contest. Vulcan Jeremy Moitry defeated MSUB's Paco Sanchez, 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 1 court. Chaminade dropped its match against Western New Mexico, 5-3.

» On the women's side, BYUH (24-0) blanked Montana State-Billings, 9-0. Both Jing Jing Liu and Adrienn Hegedus won their singles matches by the scores of 6-0, 6-0. The Seasiders will face Hilo for the women's conference title after the Vulcans handled HPU, 5-1. Chaminade squeaked by WNMU 5-4.

Vulcans headed to super regional

The University of Hawaii Hilo men's golf team will play in the 2005 NCAA Division II Championship's Northwest/West Super Regional in Dakota Dunes, S.D., May 2-4.

The super regional field is made up of 80 teams and 50 individuals. The winners will advance to the finals on May 17-20 in Savannah, Ga.

The Vulcans lead the PacWest tournament by 22 strokes over Montana State-Billings in Hilo with one round to play. Nick Mason shot a 65 for the lowest score of the day.

Western New Mexico leads the women's tournament by 27 strokes over Hilo. WNM's Katherine Dorris leads individually by six strokes over Kiilani Matsuyoshi of Hilo.

» After the first day of the 2005 PING Cougar Classic, the UH golf team stands in 10th place after two rounds at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.

Fresno State leads the 20-team field by one stroke over host BYU, 27 strokes over the Warriors. The tournament concludes today with the third and final round.

Murray nails record, qualifying mark

Hawaii junior Novelle Murray eclipsed her school record by more than a meter in the hammer throw yesterday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. The throw of 55.70 meters gave Murray a qualifying mark for the NCAA West Regionals. Earlier this season, Murray qualified in the discus.

The meet continues today with Rainbow Wahine Alexis Frederick, Meghan Weaver and Murray all competing in various events.

Wahine swamp Bulldogs in WAC softball

Melissa Coogan gave up only a single run and received seven runs of support as Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech 7-1 last night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Denise Dahlberg and Tyleen Tausaga each drove in two runs for the Rainbow Wahine (27-20, 8-5 WAC). The Lady Techsters dropped to 18-13 and 2-5.
