SMU knocks Hawaii out of WAC tournamentSouthern Methodist advanced to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis tournament yesterday by beating Hawaii 4-0 at the UH Tennis Complex.The Rainbow Wahine doubles team of Kimberly Curtis and Chloe Bihag put up the toughest fight, losing 8-4 to the Mustangs' twin sisters, Halley and Brooke Rambally. Hawaii ended its season 9-15. SMU meets Fresno State in a semifinal match today. The Bulldogs beat UTEP, which earlier got past Nevada in a play-in match. Top seed Rice also advanced to the semifinals. The Owls defeated San Jose State, which upended Louisiana Tech in a play-in game earlier in the day. Today, Rice faces fifth seed Boise State, which upset fourth-seeded Tulsa yesterday. » Brigham Young-Hawaii rolled by Western New Mexico in the first round of the Pacific West Conference women's tennis championship tournament in Laie. The win was the team's 124th straight. The Seasiders need one more win to match the Trinity College (Conn.) squash team's streak of 125 straight victories -- the longest current winning streak in any NCAA sport. BYUH's Adrienn Hegedus didn't lose a game throughout the day -- winning her singles match and teaming with Jingjing Liu to take a doubles match. In another first-round match, Hawaii Pacific stopped Montana State-Billings 7-0. The Sea Warriors' Tina Klep, Isidora Ljuri, Cecilia Lundberg, Shakti Stream, Josefine Paulie and Katarina Jacobson all won matches in singles and doubles. » Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Chaminade 5-0 in the first round of the Pacific West Conference men's tennis championship tournament yesterday in Laie. Junyoung Kim, Leon So'onalole, Jakub Huza and Jeff Rice all won singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. In another first-round men's match, Hawaii-Hilo defeated Western New Mexico 5-0. Jeremy Moitry, Dan Pollock, Staffan Moritz, Ned Hayley and Fuyuki Samejima led the way for the Vulcans by winning in singles and doubles. Also, Montana State-Billings eliminated Hawaii Pacific 5-4. The Sea Warriors' Matey Pampulov and Tomas Boleman both won singles matches and teamed up to a capture a doubles match.
Hawaii-Hilo golfers lead by 17 strokesHawaii-Hilo got four sub-par rounds to take a 17-stroke lead in the Pacific West Golf Championship at Hilo Municipal Course.The Vulcans are at 7-under 277, with Montana State-Billings in second at 294. UHH's Colin Gilliam birdied five of the front-nine holes en route to a first-round best 3-under 68. The Vulcans' Kevin Shimomura is in second place one shot back, while teammates Nick Mason and Garrett Okamura are one more stroke behind. Hawaii teams -- Hawaii Pacific, Brigham Young Hawaii and Chaminade -- hold the fourth, fifth and sixth spots. » In the women's PacWest tournament, Western New Mexico holds a commanding 24-shot lead. UHH is in second place. The Mustangs' Katharine Dorris is the individual leader at 2-over 73. Kiilani Matsuyoshi is the top Vulcans' golfer so far. She's in fifth place after shooting 78. Hawaii teams -- Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific -- are in the fourth, fifth and sixth places.

Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp this summerThe 25th annual Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Camp offers four sessions this summer at the University of Hawaii.The sessions are June 19-22, July 14-17, Aug. 1-4 and Aug. 8-11. UH's Sanders earns Ah Chew Goo awardHawaii junior wing Amy Sanders received the Ah Chew Goo Achievement Award at the Rainbow Wahine basketball team's annual banquet last night at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel.The award is given to the player who attains basketball excellence through dedication, determination and perseverance. Senior captain Milia Macfarlane won the team's most inspirational honor for the second year in a row. Sophomore guard Trisha Nishimoto was named top scholar-athlete.
