Cougars take care
of Govs

With 4:41 left in the first quarter and her team in a listless stupor, Lisa Mann did what any coach would do.

The former University of Hawaii forward called timeout and sent her Kaiser Cougars back on the floor with fullcourt pressure. A prolonged end-of-timeout buzzer, one that lasted a good 20 seconds, seemed to wake up the Cougars. Kaiser eliminated a 6-0 deficit and went on to topple Farrington 54-45 last night at the Cougars' gym.

Kaiser (12-6) improved to 6-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division. The eighth-ranked Lady Cougars remained in sole possession of third place, which could factor into homecourt advantage for the opening round of the league playoffs.

The slow start, Mann theorized, was due to an earlier-than-normal start. "The JV game got done so early. We're used to starting a lot later," she said.

Sharde Pratt scored 13 points on 5 of 6 accuracy from the floor to lead Kaiser. Kehau Bangay scored 10, all in the first half, and Nicole Lehner also tallied 10 points. Center Kilioe Aliifua, playing with a cold, finished with five points in limited action.

"It was a good effort," Mann said. "Farrington is always tough. They never gave up."

Kaiser shot 48 percent from the floor (20 of 42) to offset Farrington's 36-29 edge on the boards. Farrington shot 32 percent from the field (18 of 55).

Farrington (11-8), without coach Jenic Tumaneng, slipped to 3-7 in the East despite 17 points and nine rebounds by Tanya Sale. The Lady Govs are alive in the playoff picture, but wanted a shot at the third spot.

"The girls know what these last three (regular-season) games mean. It's a matter of coming out and wanting to play," assistant coach Jody Spencer said. "We only have two seniors. Because we're young, we're so quiet. There's really nobody to be vocal and direct on the court."

Tumaneng, away on a work-related trip to the mainland, would have liked his team's start. The visiting Lady Govs led 6-0 on three baskets by Sale.

That's when Mann called timeout and Kaiser went on an 11-2 run. "I wanted us to settle down and create some offense off our defense," she said.

Sharde Pratt's 3-point play under the rim gave the Lady Cougars the lead for good, 11-8. They extended the lead with a 14-0 run midway through the first half.

Pratt scored six points in a row, all inside, as Kaiser took a 25-10 lead with 5:10 left in the second quarter. Kaiser led 31-14 at intermission, thanks to 50 percent shooting from the field and a meager six turnovers.

Farrington shot just 6-for-26 from the field (23 percent) in the first half and committed 12 turnovers, mostly against Kaiser's fullcourt man pressure.

The Lady Cougars stretched the lead to 42-14 after Lehner drove for a layup with 2:42 to play in the third quarter. Mann, substituting liberally since the second quarter, continued to play her bench.

That gave Farrington an opportunity late in the contest. Down 52-33 with 3 minutes left, the Lady Governors came to life and scored 10 unanswered points. After Sale hustled for a follow shot and cut the lead to 52-43 with 39 seconds to go, Mann called her final timeout and sent her starters back in.

C'ani Kealoha stole the ball and scored to make it 52-45 with 17 seconds left, but Farrington got no closer.

"Main thing is, they never gave up," Spencer said. "But we should never put ourselves in that position."
