RAINBOW BASEBALL

’Bows resume
road woes

Hawaii opens a four-game trip
with a shutout loss against
California

The Hawaii bats were silent again yesterday in the opener of a four-game road trip to Northern California.

The Rainbows (18-23) were shut out for the second time in three games, losing to the California Bears 11-0 at Evans Diamond in front of 193 sun-drenched fans.

Since scoring three runs in the fourth inning of the first Rice game last Friday, the 'Bows' offense has produced just one run in the last 31 innings. Yesterday they were limited to four hits.

"It's just a shame because it is all starting to run together. Even when the score was 4-0, it wasn't that close because we were not getting anything going offensively," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso.

The Bears (25-16) scored the run they needed in the first inning off UH starter Ricky Bauer.

Mike Van Winden singled to center and was sacrificed to second by Mike Einspahr.

Bauer struck out Chris Errecart for the second out, but Brennan Boesch singled to right on a 2-2 pitch to bring Van Winden home.

Van Winden's two-out, two-run double to left-center field increased Cal's lead to 3-0 in the second. Allen Craig made the score 4-0 in the fourth inning with a solo homer to left off Rich Olsen.

Cal starter Joe Todoroff retired the first eight Rainbows in order before walking Ryan Asato with two out in the third. The only other runner Todoroff allowed in his four innings was Erik Ammon on a leadoff single in the fourth.

Ammon got as far as second base on a ground out.

The Bears used a different pitcher each inning for the remainder of the game.

UH's best chance to avoid a shutout came in the sixth when Joe Spiers singled to right to start the inning. With one out, Alex Trafton walked Isaac Omura and Nate Thurber, loading the bases.

Trafton preserved the shutout by getting outs on fielder's choices when Matt Inouye and Adam Roberts hit ground balls to Einspahr at third. He threw home for the force play on the second out and stepped on the bag for the third out.

Einspahr's grand slam in the eighth was the exclamation point on the six-run inning and UH's most lopsided shutout loss since San Jose State beat the Rainbows 12-0 in 2002.

Hawaii (5-10 conference) resumes Western Athletic Conference play tomorrow against the Spartans (20-15-1, 9-6) at San Jose's Blethen Field.

The three-game series will be broadcast on KKEA 1420-AM. The start times following the coaches show are 11 a.m., 10 a.m. and 9 a.m. Hawaii time, tomorrow through Sunday.
