UH sells 70 premium football packages in 3 days

'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the University of Hawaii athletic department fund-raising arm, has sold more than 70 football premium season-ticket packages in the first three days of sales for the 2005 season, according to a release from AKA. The number represents more than half of the available Aloha Stadium loge seats set aside for the special packages.

Five have been sold for $15,000 and five for $7,500.

The packages, which are being sold for the first time, are part of UH's plan to raise money to pull the athletic department out of deficit and increase the annual budget. The money raised goes to the scholarship fund for student-athletes.

"(This) effort will benefit all of the student-athletes and coaches of the University of Hawaii in the long run," athletic director Herman Frazier said.

Ballard, Kennelly, Abubo capture Roxy heats

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly won their heats yesterday in the first round of the Roxy Pro at Tavarua in Fiji and advanced all the way to the third round.

Hawaii's Megan Abubo also made it to the third round. She placed third in her first-round heat and then captured her second-round heat.

Seasiders roll past Western New Mexico

Top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii routed Western New Mexico 9-0 yesterday in Laie to improve to 20-0 overall and 9-0 in Pacific West Conference women's tennis.

Jing Jing Liu, Adrienn Hegedus, Tetyana Bula, Petra Teller and Gurianna Korinihona all won matches in both singles and doubles for the Seasiders.

» The Seasiders men's team also beat Western New Mexico 9-0 yesterday in Laie to improve to 17-5 and 9-0.

Dillon Porter, Dorian Porada, Junyoung Kim, Jakub Huza and Jeffery Rice all won singles and doubles matches for BYUH.

» Boise State snapped Hawaii's four-match win streak by beating the Rainbow Wahine 6-1 yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

Lauren Fitzgerald won her singles match for UH's only point. She also teamed with Paige Mainor to capture a doubles match, but the Broncos won the doubles point.

Hawaii dropped to 9-14.

Rainbow Wahine sixth heading into final round

Hawaii moved up from seventh to six place out of eight teams in the Western Athletic Conference women's golf championships in Kuna, Idaho.

The Rainbow Wahine have a 36-hole score of 57-over 633 heading into today's final round. They're 38 strokes behind San Jose State, which is at 19-over 595, one shot ahead of Tulsa.

UH's Sara Odelius and Xrya Suyetsugu came back strong after opening 81s with second-round 74s. They're in a tie for 12th place with two others.

San Jose State's Jenelle Gomez shot a 1-under 71 yesterday to overtake first-round leader Micheala Cavener of Tulsa. Gomez, who is at even par for the tournament, is one shot ahead of Cavener.

» Several Aloha Section PGA golf tournaments are coming up.

The 2005 Verizon Hall of Fame Championship is May 1-2 at the Kapalua Village Course. The entry fee is $165 and Aloha Section PGA members are eligible to participate.

The 2005 Kona Open is May 21-22 at Kona Country Club, and the Aloha Section PGA Classic is June 10 at the Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club.

Mililani Prep captures national qualifier

The Mililani Prep Softball Team won the Triple Crown of Sports national qualifier at Central Oahu Regional Park recently.

Mililani Prep went 3-1 in pool play, then won three straight championship bracket games for a berth in the Triple Crown World Series, July 19-23 in Park City, Utah.

Mililani Prep's Sarah Weisskopf had a one-hitter and a no-hitter in the tournament, while Liane Horiuchi hit safely in every game of the event.
