Theft suspect
apprehended
thanks to tip

A CrimeStoppers tip led to the arrest yesterday of a 26-year-old man who allegedly stole a car last month with a 5-month old baby girl inside.

Police took the fingerprints recovered from the scene of the incident and compared them with those of the person whose name was received from the anonymous tipster and got a match.

The suspect is expected to be charged this afternoon, police said last night.

On March 29, Raymond Corpuz left his car running while he picked up lunch at the Golden Coin Bakery, at 1719 Liliha St., and left his daughter, Aryanna, inside.

Witnesses told police an unknown man jumped inside the car and drove off. Corpuz tried to stop the car, but the suspect kept going, police said.

Before police issued a Maile Alert, patrol units found the abandoned car with the baby safe inside.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of auto theft and kidnapping at School and Makuakane streets in Kalihi early yesterday.

The suspect had been on probation after serving three months for a first-degree criminal property damage conviction at the time of the alleged kidnapping and auto theft.
