Lynch takes lead into final roundJohn Lynch took a five-stroke lead going into today's final 18 holes of the Mid-Pacific Open after firing a 4-under 68 in yesterday's third round at Mid-Pacific Country Club.Coming into yesterday's round, Norman Asao had a one-stroke lead on Lynch, but shot a disastrous 5-over 77 to drop to eighth place and eight strokes off the lead. Ed Tischler shot a tournament-best 5-under 67 to move into a tie for second with Kevin Carll.
Rainbow Wahine blast 23 hits, sweep MinersThe University of Hawaii softball team swept UTEP in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader in El Paso, Texas, yesterday.In the first game, Shannon Tabion got the complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out four. Rainbow Wahine catcher Denise Dahlberg went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a triple. Hawaii got 11 hits in the 8-0, six-inning win. In the second game, UH won 9-1 in five innings with another strong showing at the plate, posting 12 hits against the Miners. The Miners (17-28, 3-6 WAC) got 10 hits off UH (26-20, 7-5 WAC) starter Melissa Coogan, but only managed one run.
UH water polo gets 2 wins at LBSU tourneyThe No. 4 Hawaii water polo team won both of its matches yesterday at the Long Beach State Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.The Rainbow Wahine (16-6) got two late fourth-quarter goals from Iefke Van Belkum to notch a 5-4 win over No. 12 Michigan. Goalie Jamie Wendell stopped a team season-high 13 shots in Hawaii's 9-4 win over No. 17 Cal State Northridge.
Gauthier wins pole vault at Long BeachHawaii sophomore Patricia Gauthier tied for first in the pole vault with a mark of 3.65 meters at the Long Beach Invitational yesterday in Long Beach, Calif.In addition, six members of the track and field team set personal bests in their events.
Cornell's Lee to speak at QB ClubTwo-time NCAA national champion wrestler at Cornell and Saint Louis graduate Travis Lee is one of the scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club. Also speaking will be Saint Louis athletic director Todd Los Banos and Neil Voje, race director and organizer of the Mango Days 5K run.The program starts at noon, following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. The public is invited.
