Residents of house hit by
boulder still live there

Question: What ever happened to the three roommates after a huge boulder plowed through their Palolo Valley home?

Answer: The roommates, Vinson Galam, Ferdinand Ray Cadiz and Ki Hyun Oh, still live at the four-bedroom home at 2035-A 10th Ave.

Oh said he and his roommates briefly spoke about relocating once their one-year lease ends in December. Meanwhile, they decided to stay at the Palolo Valley home.

"Basically, we don't want the hassle of looking for another place. We'll see what is going to happen after the lease ends in December," Oh said.

On March 7 a 400- to 500-pound boulder about 4 feet in diameter crashed through Oh's bedroom. It continued through the closet into Cadiz's bedroom before it came to a rest in his closet.

The city determined that the boulder came from land above the home owned by Maunalani Aerie, a real estate and development company. But Maunalani Aerie's attorney Philip Deaver said the boulder came from an upper portion of the same property the house sits on or an adjacent property.

"We believe it's not coming from way up the hill," Deaver said. However, he noted that the matter was referred to Maunalani Aerie's insurance company.

The landlord who owns the property under the home could not be reached for comment.

Oh said private contractors removed the boulder on April 4. Repairs to Oh's and Cadiz's rooms is expected to occur sometime this month.

"Everything is back to normal," Oh said. Asked whether he feared other boulders might potentially fall, Oh said, "We're not worried about it. I don't see the point of living in fear in your own home."
