The infamous ‘Massie Affair’
is playing on KHET Monday
KHET will show "The Massie Affair" at 8 p.m. Monday. It's an odious part of Hawaii's history involving
Thalia Massie, a troubled wife of a Navy lieutenant who in 1931 claimed she was raped by five local men (evidence showed they could not have committed the crime), and the killing of a Hawaiian suspect by the woman's husband and wealthy mother. The killers were defended by famed attorney
Clarence Darrow but were convicted of manslaughter. They were released after serving a one-hour sentence in the governor's office. How's that for justice?
Keola Beamer scored the music for the Hawaiian portions of show. Keola's mom,
Nona Beamer, and
Charles Kaaupu are chanters.
Lamond Kanakaole provided production support. Several people from Hawaii appear in the credits. The WGBH Boston production is part of PBS' "American Experience" series ...
Hawaii's Nainoa Hoe, 27, was featured on CBS' nightly "Fallen Heroes" segment Tuesday. Army 1st Lt. Hoe, a Kamehameha and UH graduate, was killed Jan. 22 by a sniper in Iraq. The network showed pictures of Hoe with family members and briefly gave his background ... Margaret Murchie held a party at her new St. Louis Heights home Wednesday so friends could get together with her parents, Don and Helen Murchie, and sister, Barbara Bishop, from Canada. The party continued with Betty Loo Taylor's trio at the Mandarin's Veranda Thursday as it was Margaret's birthday. Margaret said she's 33 -- and let out a big belly laugh ... Thursday was also Frank Steinmiller's birthday. "Steiny" was the best all-around athlete in Roosevelt's Class of 1949. He and Margaret have much in common ...
Guitarist Jeff Peterson will be a cover boy
Jeff Peterson, a guitarist on the slack key album produced by
Charles Brotman that won the inaugural Grammy award for Hawaiian Music Album, will soon grace the cover of AAA's Westways Magazine.
Ric Noyle took photos of
Jeff at the Academy of Arts' Chinese Garden Wednesday for the cover. The Academy is one of Jeff's favorite places because his great-grandmother,
Caroline Peterson, started the floral arranging tradition at the Academy. The flower tradition is now in its 78th year. What's more, Jeff's wife,
Kahealani, works in the Academy Shop on weekends ...
