Taking notice

» The Language Documentation Project, organized by students in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, recently won the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)/NAFSA "Partners in Excellence" award.

The program and student participants will receive $1,500. One faculty, staff member or administrator will receive air fare and two nights' hotel stay to attend the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Annual Conference, during which he or she will present the program.

The Language Documentation Project was created to train speakers of undocumented languages how to document their own language. Students spent a term attending classes on language documentation techniques and issues that were voluntarily taught by graduate students in the Linguistics Department.

"Taking Notice" also runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Man dies in crash after losing control of car

A 37-year-old man was killed in a traffic accident early yesterday on Kaukonahua Road in Waialua.

Traffic police said the man, of Waialua, was driving a green car and traveling northbound on Kaukonahua Road when he lost control on a curve, veered onto the shoulder and went airborne. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a witness saw the vehicle in tall grass off the road about 7:30 a.m. yesterday but did not report it until after passing it again five hours later.

The traffic fatality is the 27th so far this year, compared with 20 at the same time last year. Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, police said.

They said the man was wearing a seat belt when the accident happened. His airbags did not deploy.

Family of 5 escapes fire, alerted by smoke detectors

Smoke detectors helped five people escape a Mililani house fire yesterday, fire officials said.

The fire started at 3:23 a.m. and engulfed part of the single-family home at 94-378 Makapipipi St.

All five people who live in the home managed to escape safely after the owner was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

"He went up to one of the bedrooms and saw the smoke and flames," Tejada said. "Then he woke up the rest of the family, got them out and called 911. In this case the smoke alarms saved lives."

According to Tejada, the owner of the home has 10 smoke detectors in his house. Those living in the house included the owner, his daughter, his teenage granddaughter and his parents, who are said to be in their 80s.

Damage estimates and the cause of the fire were not available.
